"Adriaen van der Cabel (or van der Kabel) and his brother Engel, who was ten years younger, must have arrived in Rome in the course of 1660.  On 20 August 1665 he made a statement to the Roman police to the effect that he had been in Rome for about five years and worked as a painter 'all Strada della Croce'.  He had been arrested the night before on the charge of carrying a sword.  He probably started to carry a weapon after an incident on 27 July, when Adriaen had been treated by a doctor for a serious wound to the back of his head.  In February of that year he and brother 'Angelo' had already been involved in a fight in the osteria del Cavaletto.  Several artists lodged a complaint against them, which was later withdrawn.  In the 18th century Van der Cabel was still notorious for his non-conformist lifestyle, his addiction to drink and his rapacious behaviour.  His Bentvueghel nickname was Wit.  . . .  In 1668 the Van der Cabel brothers 'living in France and married there' inherited 25 guilders each.  By then they were settled in Lyon, where they had probably stopped on their way south.  The first record of Adriaen in Lyon does not, however, occur until 1670, when he is listed as a member of the guild.  He remained there until his death in 1705."
