Venus

Statuette of Venus
AD 175-200
Rome

Roman marbles never broke free of Greek marbles. The curators' notes for most of these objects  now at the Getty in Los Angeles  are at pains to link up Roman work with specific Greek models that were universally famous in antiquity. In almost every case the original Greek exemplars are now lost past recovery, surviving only as written references and in these mostly broken shadow-works manufactured by the Romans.
