Unearthly drawings by Odilon Redon (1840-1916). Originally, these images first saw the light in fin de siècle Paris as fetish-objects. In some vague way, they embodied resistance to the 19th-century machine-age faith-in-progress (a faith that is very oddly still with us). Today the same sheets are revered in New York at the Morgan Library mainly for their mystic expressiveness but also for their status as unique commodities of steeply ascending value in a marketplace they no longer inhabit.
