Investigations


Through familiarity, my old-school push-button phone has pretty well lost whatever small amusement value it once possessed in the eyes of Mabel Watson Payne, even though her life so far has offered remarkably scant exposure to everyday electronic gadgetry.

But the screw-top of the water bottle I brought along when I most recently came over to babysit seemed for some reason to offer whole worlds of untapped mechanical possibility.
