The Fourth

At her grandmother's house Mabel Watson Payne allowed herself to be settled at the table on top of an old fat dictionary for Fourth of July brunch. Her seat belt was improvised with a scarf.

Berries and French toast cut into small bits suited her taste admirably -- until she noticed her parents' plates which somehow looked much more alluring with full-scale food.

Still, she so much prefers feeding herself to being fed by anybody else that with only a little encouragement she ate a substantial meal made up of many small bites from her own plate.
