New York Gazing

When I was growing up along the banks of the Mississippi River back in the middle of the last century it was very common to hear adults say, "I may not have good taste, but I know what I like." I haven't heard anybody say that for a very long time, but clearly the message sank in (when my brain was still tender) and worked its influence on my own unsystematic, pick-and-choose methods.

The object immediately above is described as a "hyacinth holder" but there is no account on the label of what kind of creature it might be. My best guess is a hedgehog. Or maybe it is a porcupine and the hyacinths become the spines.
